We installed a GEM Remotes boat lift control at the dock of a rental property on Fort Myers Beach. The lift had been flooded by Hurricane Ian and was never restored. When we took the cover off the lift motor we found a bird’s nest on top of it and the gear above it rusted, and we had to replace the motor.

  • Location: Fort Myers Beach, Florida
  • Service: boat lift motor replacement and dock electrical
  • Equipment: new lift motor, GEM Remotes control, two outlets, weather-rated Square D disconnect, Leviton panel

What we did

  • Took the cover off the flooded lift motor and found a bird’s nest on top of it.
  • Replaced the lift motor.
  • Installed a GEM Remotes boat lift control on the dock piling, with two outlets under it in a clear weatherproof cover.
  • Installed a weather-rated Square D disconnect on the piling.
  • Ran conduit down the piling to the dock and fed the work from a Leviton panel.

What a GEM Remotes control does

GEM Remotes makes boat lift controllers. The control box switches the lift’s motor up and down and lets the boat owner raise and lower the lift from a handheld remote instead of pressing a button on the unit.

Warning signs

NEC Article 555, section 555.10 requires a warning sign at docking facilities telling people that electrical currents may be present in the water. The control box in these photos carries that No Swimming, Warning, Potential Shock Hazard sign.
